Dutch Leauge Looses Automatic UCL Group Stage Place

The Dutch league champions will not get an automatic place in the Champions League group stage for the first time next season.

Eredivisie champions Feyenoord finished bottom of their Champions League group and Vitesse Arnhem were bottom of their Europa League group this season.

New Uefa rankings put the Dutch league in 12th place in Europe. The decision follows the failure of the national team to reach Euro 2016 and the World Cup in Russia next year.

A Dutch club has not won a European trophy since 2002, when Feyenoord beat Borussia Dortmund in the Uefa Cup final.

Ajax were Europa League runners-up last year, losing the final to Manchester United, but failed to reach the Champions League group stages this year.

Spain, Germany, England and Italy will each have four teams that qualify automatically for the Champions League group stages from next year.
